Extra Outdoor Fun

Hi At Home Environmental Scientists!

If you are up for some extra environmental science feel free to check out any of these activities or websites!  …and did you know our school trails are open to the public from dawn to dusk!

OTHER OUTDOOR RESOURCES:

  • BEAVER BROOK is a great, local resource to take advantage of!  At Maple Hill Farm at 117 Ridge Road, they have an outdoor, all natural play area with log cars and stumps and large rocks to jump on.  It is behind the garden area …almost like you are walking to the “back yard” of the building.  If you want to go for an easy hike that leaves from Maple Hill Farm just head down to the main trail head in the parking lot.  There is a kiosk with some maps and other information.

  • Mount Kearsarge South is a nearby mountain that would make for a great adventure with your family.  It’s a “big” mountain, but short and doable if you take your time.  At the top you have a great view as well as a picnic table for a mountain-top lunch.  Here is the website with trail info.  Mt.  Kearsarge. (Don’t get this mixed with with Kearsarge North, which is a much higher mountain in the White Mountain Range.)

  • Look into Letterboxing and Geocaching.  Both are great outdoor scavenger hunts that would make for some good family outings.  When letterboxing, you take a notebook and stamp and follow written clues to find a container that has a stamp you can collect in your book and you would leave your stamp in their book.   Going Geocaching is when you use a phone or GPS device to walk to a specific GPS coordinate.  When you find it there is usually a box of small trinkets; you would choose a trinket to take and leave a trinket in it’s place.  Here are a couple websites that explain each one a little more and can tell you where the letterboxes and geocaches are located.  LETTERBOXING   &   GEOCACHING

Kid Friendly Links, but hey kids, ask a grown up!  🙂

  • PBS  WildKratts – I LOVE the Kratt Brothers!  They have lots of great information hidden in their shows!  Check it out at the PBS website: https://pbskids.org/wildkratts/

  • Animal Web Cams – I stole this from an email from the high school.  🙂  It is an article that has some great links to all different live animal web cameras all over!  The bear one is really cool!
